What Foods to Avoid on a Ketosis Diet
For someone who is just starting out on a ketosis diet, it can be easy to get overwhelmed with the choices. There are so many different “approved” diet foods that you can eat while you are on this diet! And since there are so many diet foods to avoid, it can seem impossible at times. But if you look deeper into what foods to avoid on a ketosis diet, you’ll see that most of the things you’ve been told are either not healthy or are really bad for you. So how do you know which ones to stay away from?
Let’s start by listing some of the most common foods that are NOT good for dieters. Yes, even the ones that claim to be “low carb” or “fat free.” You should probably give up on these altogether and stick with some sort of healthy diet – but your main focus here is to find out what foods to avoid on a ketosis diet. These are definitely the worst foods you should be eating.
Fried foods – Don’t even think about eating fried foods while you are on this diet! They are absolutely fatty and can actually contribute to more weight loss, not less. If you’re used to eating fries and chicken (aside from a salad), you might want to give up the fried food part of your diet. Instead, you might want to try something that is made of fish, such as tuna wraps or salmon. Another great alternative is to go with low fat items such as cottage cheese or skim milk. These are also healthier options than fried items.
Alcohol – This one’s pretty obvious, but just bear with me for a second. It’s OK to have a drink every now and then, but excessive alcohol can cause serious problems with your body in the long run. So if you are a heavy drinker, then it’s best to simply cut down or eliminate it altogether. Some good alternatives are red wine and white wine (if you can get it).
Caffeine – The thing with caffeine is that it stimulates your metabolism. However, too much can actually be bad for you. Too much can cause fatigue and other negative side effects. So like any stimulant, limit your caffeine consumption while you are on the diet. However, if you cannot seem to avoid it completely, try taking decaf coffee or tea.
Meat – Now, I’m not saying you should totally get rid of meat. You can have chicken or fish (if you want), and there are always going to be valuable sources of protein available. What I am saying is that if you want to lose weight quickly and sustain it, do not include meat as part of your diet. It will most likely result in weight loss and frustration.
Nuts – These types of foods are usually high in calories and fats, but some people find them to be a good snack. For example, walnuts are a good source of protein. However, they are heavy and fatty, so they are not good for long-term use in a ketosis diet.
As you can see, this diet does not recommend that you completely exclude a variety of good, healthy foods from your diet. However, as a general rule, you definitely do not want to eat any high calorie, fatty, or sweet foods. If you must have them, be sure to use them sparingly and only in moderation. Instead, focus your eating on vegetables, lean proteins, and fruits. These are the foods that will help you achieve long-lasting, healthy weight loss.
