First of all, you’re probably wondering what keto means. Ketosis is the process of using ketones as an alternative to glucose in your blood stream. Basically, you want to replace the glucose you are taking in with ketones. The keto diet is basically a high-fiber, sufficient-potassium, low-sugar, low-fat diet which in medical circles is usually used to treat epileptic children. The diet forces your body to burn fat instead of glucose to provide your body with energy.

As a matter of fact, it has been proven that carbs from foods such as pasta, potatoes and rice can make it harder to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. So, if you’re looking to go on a keto diet to lose weight, it’s important to avoid carbs like pasta, rice and potatoes as much as possible. Instead, try eating more soy products like tofu and soya sauce. These products are high in both protein and nutrients, helping your body use energy more efficiently.

In one study conducted at the University of Rhode Island, lab rats were fed for one year a diet consisting only of a diet rich in fats, salt and sugar. At the end of the one year study, the scientists noted an increase in ketones in their bodies. Ketones are produced when the liver produces a ketone derivative called acetone. The diet caused a significant increase in ketones in the blood and the rats exhibited signs of obesity.

Another study done at the University of Toronto, Canada has found that diabetic mice did better on a ketogenic diet. This diet uses high amounts of fats and sugars while maintaining a low carbohydrate diet. The results showed that the diabetic mice had a four fold increased chance of becoming obese. Interestingly, the mice didn’t gain any weight when on the diet. This means that although they were consuming large amounts of fat and sugar, they were not putting any on the scale. It is currently unknown how this works, but the potential for diabetes is one of the exciting benefits of the diet.

The reason why carbs get turned into fat in the body and why ketones cause a higher metabolic state is due to the large amount of glucose available to the brain. Once the brain notices a large amount of carbs, it thinks that the body needs to produce more glycogen to power the brain. So without carbs, the brain goes into “starvation mode” and your body uses fat to make up for the lack of carbs. In this state the body burns through the day at a reduced rate. In a state of starvation the brain cannot regulate everything so once you go into ketosis the brain does not get enough energy and it shuts down completely.
