There have been many claims recently that can you eat cherries on the keto diet. In particular this comes from a popular weight loss supplement company who are making a product called Slim Fast. The claim is that this fruit can help increase your metabolism to help with your weight loss.

Although there is some truth to this, there are a few things that need to be looked at before jumping into it. Firstly there is the issue of whether this type of weight loss diet plan will work for you. If you are going to lose weight, even small amounts, then this diet is not right for you.

It works because of the way it causes your body to break down fat in your muscles. Basically this means that the carbohydrates that you are consuming are converted into sugar and used as energy. What happens is that the body’s own fat cells start to take up the space that the carbohydrates have occupied. When the fat cells start to die they release the fatty acids and turn into a liquid that helps move your blood through your body.

So what happens if you are on a keto diet? If you are using a high protein or low carbohydrate diet, such as the Atkins plan, the fruit should not be allowed. The reasoning here is that it will cause your body to run at a lower rate. Fruits, like cherries are good sources of fiber and can help to curb your appetite. Fiber can help you lose weight by taking some of the pressure off your stomach as you are eating. Just remember that you should never eliminate carbs from your diet all together, you just need to increase the amount of good carbs.

If you really want to go the fruit route, then you could eat approximately six ounces of the fruit per day. Keep in mind that just because you eliminate one type of food does not mean that you cannot eat foods that contain sugar. Most fruit contains natural sugar. You can limit your intake of sugary fruits and you may find that eating fruit becomes a lot more enjoyable than you thought. Another great thing about fruit is that there are no fat grams and just about everything can be digested easily. As long as you stay away from simple sugars, you will be fine.

The hardest part about going this route is that you are going to have to give up a few good foods. Things like breads and pastas as well as sweets are going to be a bit more difficult for you to get past your taste buds. However, once you get used to them, they are going to be much easier to consume. The good news is that you can usually eat these types of foods in moderation and they will not sabotage your diet plan. Over time, you are going to find that you do not even miss the foods that you were accustomed to.
